Mastering Your Budget: How to Split Transactions
We've all been there: you go to a big retailer like Walmart or Amazon and walk out with a receipt that includes groceries, a new pair of headphones, and maybe even a gift for a friend. When you look at your bank statement, it shows up as one single, large expense.
If you're serious about budgeting, categorizing that whole amount as "Groceries" feels wrong—because it is. To keep your reports accurate and your budgets on track, Monelyx allows you to split a single transaction into multiple line items.
Why Splitting Matters
Accurate reporting is the foundation of good financial habits. If you don't split that $200 receipt, your "Groceries" budget might look overspent while your "Electronics" budget looks untouched. Splitting ensures every dollar is accounted for in its rightful category.
Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these steps to break down your complex purchases:
Locate the Transaction
Go to your Transactions list and find the expense you want to split.
Open the Split Menu
Click on the "three dots" icon (context menu) at the end of the transaction row and select "Split Transaction". A side panel will appear with the transaction details.
Define Amounts and Categories
By default, Monelyx starts with two parts. You can adjust the amount for each part and assign them different categories. For example, assign $150 to Groceries and $50 to Electronics.
Need more parts? Just click the "Add Part" button to create as many segments as you need.
Balance the Math
This is the most important part: the sum of your split parts must equal the original transaction amount.
Keep an eye on the "Remaining" indicator at the top. It will turn green and show $0.00 once your math is perfectly balanced. You won't be able to save the split until the remaining amount is zero.
Pro Tip: Handling Shared Expenses If you bought something on behalf of a friend during your trip, you can assign that specific split part to a Contact. Monelyx will automatically create a debt record for that friend, making it easy to track who owes you what without cluttering your personal spending reports!
Once you're satisfied, hit Save, and your single transaction will be replaced by its beautifully organized components. Happy budgeting!
